How to Unlock Characters in Worldwide Spies

Worldwide Spies advertises more than 25 playable characters. Lightning McQueen, Mater, Finn McMissile, Francesco Bernoulli, and a rotating mix of World Grand Prix and Piston Cup faces sit in that garage. Players still ask the same three questions: how do I get Rookie McQueen, why is All-American McQueen missing, and is a paint job a new car. This page splits the roster into buckets so you stop treating every livery as an unlock quest.

The game is a free Roblox alpha from Team Chrome HQ, playable since 25 April 2021. It is not affiliated with Disney or Pixar. Because it is alpha, the garage is still growing. A character you saw in a trailer or on the Players Hub might be default, group-locked, event-timed, or simply not shipped yet. That last case is unfinished content, not a broken account.

Bucket 1: Rookie McQueen from the group

Rookie McQueen is the one unlock you can force on purpose. Like Worldwide Spies on Roblox, join the Team Chrome HQ group (also written Team C.H.R.O.M.E.), then rejoin the server. The classic Lightning look is the reward. If the racer does not show, wait for the group membership to register and hop servers again. Do not buy a random gamepass from a stranger in chat; the official prompt is like plus group join.

Bucket 2: Default roster

Most of the 25-plus characters are simply there when you spawn. The live mix has included Radiator Springs regulars, World Grand Prix racers (Francesco Bernoulli, Raoul Caroule, Carla Veloso, Jeff Gorvette, Nigel Gearsley, Shu Todoroki, Miguel Camino, Max Schnell, and other WGP names as they are added), Piston Cup faces, and spy-side cars such as Finn. Exact availability moves with patches. Treat the in-game selector as truth and this wiki as the explanation.

Default does not mean “best.” It means you already own the body. Pick one racer and learn its width before you tour the garage. Francesco looks at home in Porto Corsa; that is flavor. Your line from How to Win Races matters more than swapping to a legendary F1 cameo you unlocked five minutes ago.

If a name from the film is missing, check the Players Hub and the Updates Hub before you assume a code is required. Codes, when they exist, are listed on the Promo Codes Hub. They are not the main roster pipeline.

Bucket 3: Paint jobs are not new characters

The 31 May 2025 Leap Forward update added paint jobs, redesigned GUIs, race placements, and extra fan-favorite racers. Paints change how a racer you already have looks. They do not add a second Lightning with different stats. Collections group those colors. Event paints can be time-limited without turning the base character off.

If you want the color sheet, open the Paint Jobs Guide and the Leap Forward update notes. If you want a different person in the garage, you are in the wrong menu. Paint is a livery. Roster is a character. Mixing those words is how players think they “do not have McQueen” when they actually do not have a holiday paint.

Bucket 4: Limited event skins

All-American McQueen and Star and Stripe Rod Redline are the examples to memorize. They are limited event skins, not default unlocks and not ordinary paints. They have shown up on a calendar (including a window around early July) and then left. Missing them does not mean your group join failed. It means the event is closed.

When a patriotic or holiday skin returns, the developers usually say so on the experience page or Team Chrome channels. Do not trust a player selling “the code for All-American.” If a real promo string exists, it will be on the Promo Codes Hub. Event skins can sit beside paint jobs in the UI and still be a different bucket: a full themed body versus a color on a body you own.

Rod Redline as a character and Star and Stripe Rod Redline as an event look are easy to confuse. One is a spy in the roster (when shipped). The other is a timed Stars-and-Stripes treatment. Read the name in the selector twice before you grind.

What you cannot unlock by driving more

There is no secret Radiator Springs statue that grants the whole WGP grid. There is no clearance level from the old console Cars 2 game that you must grind for Shu Todoroki. New Agent Clearance is a badge for finishing the first training race with Union Jack Finn and Racer Holley. It does not open a hidden garage. Alpha Player and New Agent are join badges. You also cannot buy Disney permission. The project is a fan racer. Roster additions follow what Team Chrome HQ can build and keep in a 20-player server, not a licensed season pass. If a rumored racer is only on a YouTube thumbnail, wait for it in the selector.

A practical unlock order

1. Like the game and join Team Chrome HQ. Confirm Rookie McQueen.
2. Finish training so you can actually drive whoever you pick.
3. Choose one default racer and race Radiator Springs until the camera is boring.
4. Apply a Leap Forward paint if you care about look. Skip this if you are still spinning.
5. Chase event skins only while the event is live. Do not sit in the lobby hoping All-American returns during a random Tuesday.
6. Recheck the Players Hub after big patches. Alpha rosters grow in chunks, often beside map remasters such as Black Forest.
